The Blood Red Moon Theories

Back in 2015 talk of the tetrad of blood red moons was all the rage. A book by pastor John Hagee sold like hotcakes and prophecy teachers around the world snapped it up to see if what he proposed was true. I even taught a class on it and it was a very interesting topic to say the least. As the teaching went, major events surrounding Israel’s feasts happened that changed history. In a conversation with Mark Biltz, television Bible host Sid Roth brought up the topic:

Sid Roth: Well the thing that is so amazing to me, tell me about the last set of tetrads, that's four of these blood moons in a row. One was just happened to be in 1948. Another one just happened to be in 1967. What significant things happened in 1948 and 19? I think all of you know. Do many of you know what happened in '48 and '67? But just in case.

Mark Biltz: Sure. The thing that amazed me concerning the math is, you know, according to NASA, over 5000 years you only average one total lunar eclipse every year and a half, and here we have four within a year and a half, and they're falling on the feast days. And the last time that happened was when Israel recaptured Jerusalem in 1967 and 1968. When I saw that, it was like, oh good grief, this is supernatural. And so I go running back and I look at the next date and it was right after Israel became a nation in 1948. It happened in 1949 and '50. And so now my mind is reeling. So I have to go back and I got to do some more research. And I'm going back and I find out it happened during the Inquisition, 1492, when Columbus sails the ocean blue.

Sid Roth: Now why was that? That was pretty bad for us Jewish people because we Jews were literally left, if we didn't leave we'd be murdered. So it wasn't too good for us Jewish people, but it had an effect on the world. What was that?

Mark Biltz: Well sure it did because they expelled all the Jews on the 9th of Av. And also in Portugal, in 1493, 1494, what happens, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella are taking all the Jewish wealth, but that is what helped finance the finding of the New World and all the Jews coming over to America.

Of course the thing that everyone wanted to know was what was going to happen when they happened again? As I said, I gave updates on that time back around 2015 and then when it happened during the 2022 midterms elections.

Another Explanation Just Popped Up

One thing had me stepping back and slowing down on the predictions and that is that blood red moons happen all over the world a lot of times. According to those who keep track of the phenomena they happen 2-3 times a year. The trick is to figure out what will happen for the next one and that ends up opening a whole other can of worms. Am I saying there is nothing to them? Actually no, but the histrionics or drama we hear from some in Christian circles clouds the real meanings. But we shouldn’t swing to the other extreme of just ignoring all signs in the heavens. God created the sun and moon for signs as we see in Genesis 1:14:

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years..(NKJV)

The difficult thing is to unravel the signs and add meaning to them. The upcoming eclipse on April 8th is generating a lot of attention and rightly so. Just what that means in a subject for another time, but right now I want to point what is also happening to the moon that could turn this whole future talk of the moon turning red on its head. Forget the eclipse thinking, how about something else that we’ve just seen and that is the moon is literally turning red on it’s own. It’s actually rusting. And scientists all around the world are clamoring to figure out why as we read in this article from The Smithsonian Magazine:

Puzzling astronomers, the moon appears to have rusty patches on its surface—despite lacking two essential, rust-inducing ingredients: water and oxygen.

According to a new paper published in the journal Science Advances, scientists from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa made the discovery after reviewing data collected from Chandrayaan-1’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper instrument (also known as M3), an instrument built by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory at California State University that was onboard during a Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) mission. University of Hawaiʻi geologist Shuai Li, the paper’s lead author, says he had been studying imagery captured during the mission and noticed spectra, or light being reflected off of the moon’s surface, present at the lunar poles, revealing that these areas are comprised of compositions that are different from other expanses of the moon.

Yep, the moon is rusting.

How Did It Get There?

Reading on in the article we see what is causing the moon to rust:

So, what exactly is causing the moon to rust like an old jalopy sitting in a junkyard? The scientists have come up with a few ideas, but the one that makes the most sense to them is all thanks to Earth. They found that the surfaces of the moon most affected by oxidation are the ones facing our planet. The scientists theorize that oxygen could be making the 239,000-mile journey onboard Earth's magnetotail, a particle-packed magnetic wake trailing our planet like a windsock.

“Our hypothesis is that lunar hematite is formed through oxidation of lunar surface iron by the oxygen from the Earth's upper atmosphere that has been continuously blown to the lunar surface by solar wind when the Moon is in Earth's magnetotail during the past several billion years,” he says.

Did you get all that? Explaining the reason is not a hot topic for prophecy teachers, though. Why is the real question.

Joel And John Saw The Moon Turning Red

The sun will turn dark and the moon will turn to blood before the day of the Lord. His coming will be a great and troubled day. (Joel 2:31, NLV)

I watched as the Lamb broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood. (Rev 6:12, NLT)

When the whole blood red moons talk started these verses were also used a lot, but maybe, just maybe the moon will literally turn red as in rusted. Or it could come from something else as developed by Wayne Croley who is the founder of Prophecy Proof Insights, in an article on the subject:

Universe Today, a popular astronomy website, has an article focused on answering why the moon sometimes turns red.

  • The article mentions that the moon can turn red during a lunar eclipse.
  • The article also mentions that the moon can turn red after a volcanic eruption. An eruption emits a lot of particulate matter (ash, smoke, etc) into the atmosphere. The particulate matter in the air scatters blue and green colors away and enables the color red to pass through easier.

The great earthquake (Revelation 6:12), fire, and the pillars of smoke (Joel 2:30 & Acts 2:19) indicates that there’ll be huge geological instability across the planet near the start of the Day of the Lord. We can deduce from this that it is likely that:

  • Many volcanoes will erupt and send lots of particulate matter into the atmosphere.
  • The entire planet could be covered by particulate matter from these eruptions.
  • The blood moon caused by these eruptions could be seen by everyone since it takes time for smoke to clear from the atmosphere.

He concludes that these verses aren’t from an eclipse:

It’s unlikely that the blood moon in Revelation will be the result of a lunar eclipse. It’s much likelier that the blood moon will come from the geological instability that will arise as the Day of the Lord nears.

I urge you to not get caught up in the hype of date setters who claim that a big event will happen because a lunar eclipse is coming up. I have run across many people who have made failed predictions in recent years because they used a lunar eclipse as the basis for their date setting.

Red Is A Popular Color These Days

With the talk of the red heifers being the right age to be sacrificed and then the talk of blood red moons, and now the moon turning red from hematite the buzz of redness is in the news a lot. I could add Red China to the mix, too. In his article titled Red Rust On The Moon, Red Heifers In Israel, And A Red Horse That Is Preparing To Ride, author Michael Snyder had this to say:

What does the color red mean to you? Today, I was thinking about several recent news stories that are related to Bible prophecy, and I realized that they all had something to do with the color red. So I asked Google what the color red symbolizes, and I was sent to a Wikipedia article that explains that red “is the color of blood” and that it “has historically been associated with sacrifice, danger, and courage”. In addition, the color red is often used to convey some sort of a warning. Just imagine what it would be like if all stop signs were colored yellow. That wouldn’t work nearly as well. The reason why stop signs are red is because the color red gets your attention.

And we know for various reasons a red moon gets our collective attentions, if only because it isn’t normally that color. What does all this mean in the prophetic scheme of things? The hints are not really hidden if we look back at all the verses. The moon turns red before the Second Coming of the Lord and in Joel 3:32 we read this:

“Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved…(TLB)

If you aren’t a Christian, now is the time to take care of that. And If you’re not living as close to Him as you should, now it the time to address that at well. Like that red stop sign, God is trying to get your attention. Heed the warning at all costs, friends.
