A Speaking Image

John saw a beast rise that would cause an image to "both speak and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed", followed by a mark - "that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark". For most of church history that passage sat in the category of far-future mystery. It doesn't sit there anymore. In the last year, the argument over what it means, and who it points to, moved out of Bible-prophecy conferences and into a billionaire's private lecture hall in Rome.

Secret Lectures in Rome

Since March 2026, Peter Thiel - the co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, and one of the largest Republican donors in the country - has been running an invitation-only, four-lecture series on the Antichrist in Rome, a short walk from the Vatican. The talks were so controversial that the Catholic universities initially connected to the venue publicly denied sponsoring them. The Associated Press called it one of the hottest tickets in the Vatican's backyard. Italian officials called Thiel's ideas scandalous, according to Fortune. The lectures have since been picked up as a recurring series, with continued coverage from CNN and Premier Christian News.

An Upside-Down Antichrist

Here's where it gets strange. Thiel isn't warning that AI is the Antichrist's tool. He's arguing close to the opposite. "In the 17th, 18th century, the Antichrist would have been a Dr. Strangelove, a scientist who did all this sort of evil crazy science," Thiel said in his opening lecture, according to recordings reviewed by The Washington Post. "In the 21st century, the Antichrist is a Luddite who wants to stop all science. It's someone like Greta or Eliezer," he continued, naming climate activist Greta Thunberg and AI-safety researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky - a researcher Thiel himself funded early in his career. In a later lecture, he widened the list: the "legionnaires of the Antichrist" are "people like Eliezer Yudkowsky, Nick Bostrom, and Greta Thunberg [who] argue for world government to stop science," according to a detailed recap from The Daily Bell. In his telling, a coming government he calls "Leviathan" - built from that same fear - is what the Antichrist will ultimately ride "to take over the world."

It's a real inversion of how most Christians read the passage, and it hasn't gone unnoticed. Even MS NOW, no friend of traditional prophecy teaching, called his theology a mishmash and pointed out that Thiel has no formal training in the subject he's now teaching a few blocks from the Vatican.

Thiel, Vance, and the Pope

This isn't just an academic theory - Thiel has real influence over someone a heartbeat from the presidency. He's the single most important political patron of Vice President JD Vance, and according to The Letters From Leo, leaked recordings show Thiel naming Pope Leo XIV himself as a potential manifestation of the Antichrist, and advising JD Vance to ignore the moral advice of the pope altogether. That's not a minor detail. The most influential donor behind a likely future president is steering him away from the very Church leader warning the world about AI's spiritual dangers - and toward a theology where caution itself gets cast as the enemy.

The Great White Wolf

JD Vance's name has surfaced in prophetic circles before Thiel's lectures ever made headlines. Julie Green spent over a year relaying warnings about a figure in the president's inner circle she called the "Great White Wolf," and in January 2026 she named him directly: "This traitor, this snake, must be revealed so he can be removed... JD Vance is the great white wolf." In the same word, published on Julie Green Ministries International, she added, "The great white wolf and all of his wolf pack must be removed to truly save this nation, says the Lord of Hosts."

Troy Black heard something that lines up with real weight behind it. In a word dated March 10, 2026 and posted the following month, "What God Told Me About Vance & the Mark of the Beast", he says he heard: "Vance is setting forth the mark of the beast requirements if he gets into office. He is opening up floodgates to allow the systems required for an antichrist type of leader to arise... he is welcoming in the next stage that would allow this to take place eventually." But Black is careful to note this isn't presented as a certainty - the very next thing he says he heard is God actively restraining it: "I want to stay his hand... keep the floodgate closed for a while yet. It isn't time. It isn't time yet. And I'm handing the reigns of control to another who is capable in order to stay the tide."

Here's the connection worth sitting with. Thiel isn't just funding Vance's career - he's actively shaping how Vance thinks about caution itself, teaching him that the people sounding alarms about unchecked power are the real villains and that restraint is what the enemy wants. That's the exact posture Black's word warns is opening the floodgates rather than helping hold them shut. Whatever you make of two specific prophetic words, the pattern lines up: the man Julie Green named, the man Thiel is discipling away from the Pope's warnings, and the man Black heard would set forth the mark of the beast requirements if he gets into office - is the same man.

Katechon and the Restrainer

One piece of Thiel's argument does lean on real Scripture. Paul told the Thessalonians that a "restrainer" - in Greek, katechon - holds back the man of lawlessness until he's taken out of the way. Thiel has reportedly applied that label to the United States itself, arguing that America's grip on the global financial system, through networks like SWIFT, functions as a modern restrainer. His own warning, per The Daily Bell, is that if that restraining power grows too total, it risks becoming the very thing it was restraining. It's a clever use of a real text - but stretching a description of a future, specific restraining ministry onto a modern nation-state is an interpretive leap Scripture never authorizes.

Rome's Quiet Reply

Thiel's lectures land in a particularly loaded moment for the Vatican. Two months after his Rome series began, Pope Leo XIV released his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, devoted entirely to AI - warning that it's being sold to the world as something close to a substitute messiah. Whatever Thiel intends by his lectures, the Pope he's lecturing near has already published a very different answer, one that treats AI's real danger as spiritual displacement rather than a coming world government.

What Revelation Actually Says

Set the billionaire's theory next to the text itself and the contrast is sharp. John doesn't describe the beast's power as arising from a backlash against technology - he describes a system that "causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark", built on the ability to track, verify, and restrict who can participate in the economy at all. That's a description of centralized capability, not decentralized fear of it.

Perry Stone, who wrote an entire book on this connection, Artificial Intelligence Versus God, argues that AI is precisely what makes a speaking, thinking image of the beast technologically possible for the first time in history. In a more recent piece, The Elect Are Being Deceived, Stone warns that AI-generated deepfakes and false voices are already fulfilling Jesus's own warning that "false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect". His caution is aimed at mature believers, not just the uninformed: "Good people who really do have a love for the Lord can fall into these traps."

Amanda Grace's Revelation 13 teaching, covered in Amanda Grace: The Beast System Is Emerging Before Our Eyes, names AI, robotics, and digital financial systems as part of what she calls an "unholy trinity" of dragon, beast, and false prophet - a precursor to the system Revelation describes, not the system itself yet. Even so, she's careful not to overstate how far the counterfeit can go: "The beast will try," she said of humanity's technological reach for that kind of power. "He'll get close… He'll still fall short."

Not Fear - Partnership

None of this - not Thiel's lectures, not his hold on a future president, not a wolf in the inner circle - is a reason to be afraid. Scripture never tells believers to fear the Antichrist. It tells them to recognize him and stand. And the One doing the standing isn't a nation. Paul told the Thessalonians that a restrainer holds back the man of lawlessness - but the ultimate restraining power in a believer's life was never Washington, and it was never Rome. It's the Holy Spirit living inside every person who belongs to Christ. "Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world" isn't a promise about American exceptionalism. It's a promise about the Church - every believer, in every nation, carrying an active, pushing-back presence that no lecture series in Rome and no title in Washington can touch.

That's the personal question this episode actually leaves you with. Not who is the Antichrist - Scripture never made that a spectator sport. The question is whether you know the Spirit that's already in you well enough to recognize a counterfeit when one shows up dressed as a solution. Thiel is right about one thing: something is coming. He's just pointed the finger in exactly the wrong direction, and there are people wired into the systems he's building who will follow wherever he points unless someone else is actively testing it against the Word. That's not a job for a country. That's a job for you.

Test It, Then Stand

John warned believers to "test the spirits, whether they are of God", and that applies as much to a tech billionaire's private theology seminar as it does to any prophetic word. Thiel is a brilliant businessman, but Scripture was never handed to Silicon Valley to reinterpret for its own convenience. The pattern in Revelation is centralized control, deception through false signs, and a system that decides who can buy and sell - and every honest reading of where AI is headed lines up far more naturally with that pattern than with Thiel's version, where the villains are the ones asking for caution.

Whatever comes of the lectures in Rome, the promise given to the Church hasn't moved. Jesus told His followers that when they see these things begin, they should The Message renders that same moment with a different kind of urgency: "When all this starts to happen, up on your feet. Stand tall with your heads high. Help is on the way!" (Luke 21:27-28, MSG). Not fear. Not fascination with who gets the theology right first. Stand up. Head high. Spirit active. Help is already here.
