Something Is Happening
Something happened in December 2022 that the world filed under sports history and quickly forgot. Approximately 1.5 billion people locked their eyes onto a single patch of grass in Lusail, Qatar, to watch Argentina and France settle the FIFA World Cup Final. Simultaneously. One city. One screen. One moment. The infrastructure required — fiber optic cables beneath oceans, satellites in geostationary orbit, mobile networks pinging across every continent — worked perfectly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. It is the most natural thing in the world — now. It was not always. And that distinction is everything. Because there is a passage in the Book of Revelation, written in 95 AD on the island of Patmos, that describes something so logistically impossible for John's era that scholars spent nineteen centuries either spiritualizing it away or leaving it as an unanswered mystery. The World Cup has just demonstrated, in living color, exactly how it will work.
The Passage That Baffled Nineteen Centuries
Read Revelation 11:3–13 carefully and you find one of the most cinematically vivid sequences in all of prophetic Scripture. Two witnesses appear in Jerusalem during the Tribulation and prophesy for 1,260 days. They call down fire, shut the sky, turn water to blood, and survive every assassination attempt. When their testimony is complete, the Beast kills them in the street and leaves their bodies unburied. And then John writes the part that was, for most of church history, theologically embarrassing:
"And those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations will see their dead bodies three-and-a-half days... And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth." — Revelation 11:9–10, NKJV
Those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations will see their dead bodies. Not hear about them. Not read a report. See — in real time, for three and a half days. Then they will rejoice, make merry, and send gifts to one another like a worldwide holiday. A Roman emperor couldn't make that happen. A Medieval pope couldn't. Napoleon couldn't. But on December 18, 2022, 1.5 billion people demonstrated the exact mechanism — live, in full color, without realizing what they were rehearsing.
The Infrastructure of Prophecy
The World Cup did not create the technology that will fulfill Revelation 11 — but it proved that the technology already exists and works at the scale the passage requires. The same global satellite broadcast infrastructure that carries a penalty shootout to a pub in Dublin will carry the image of two dead men lying in a Jerusalem street to every screen on earth. The same real-time social media amplification that made the entire planet erupt when Mbappé equalized in the 80th minute will push those bodies to every feed within minutes of their fall. And the detail that once seemed most peculiar — "send gifts to one another" — reads today like a straightforward description of Amazon, Venmo, and digital gift cards. After every championship, fans send each other merchandise, transfer money across continents through apps, and buy each other drinks from thousands of miles away. The gift-sending economy is now the ordinary fabric of global celebration. John wrote the end result of all of it in 95 AD. He was right. He simply wrote it two thousand years before the infrastructure arrived.
The Emotional Machinery Is Already Trained
There is something deeper here than technology. The World Cup does not just reveal the mechanism that will carry the events of Revelation 11 — it reveals the emotional capacity of a post-Christian world to celebrate something it hates being destroyed. Watch the faces of a billion people when a World Cup is decided. They are not reserved. They are delirious — weeping, dancing in streets, strangers embracing, flags flying at 3 AM. The emotional release is total and planetary, crossing every language and time zone simultaneously. Now read what Revelation says the world does when the two witnesses are dead: they rejoice and make merry. The Greek word — euphraínō — means to feast, to celebrate openly, to be thoroughly glad. This is not quiet satisfaction. This is World Cup energy, directed at the death of two men who spent 1,260 days convicting the conscience of the earth. The world has been practicing that precise emotional response every four years. Paul described where it ultimately leads:
"And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind." — Romans 1:28, NKJV
The Tribulation world will not stumble into that celebration accidentally. It will arrive there having been shaped — over decades — into a humanity that has perfected collective passion while systematically emptying itself of the fear of God. The World Cup is not just revealing the technology of prophecy. It is revealing the spiritual condition of the world that Revelation describes.
When the Party Stops
After three and a half days of global celebration — cameras still rolling, commentary still live, gifts still being sent — something interrupts the party:
"Now after the three-and-a-half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them... And they ascended to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies saw them." — Revelation 11:11–12, NKJV
Their enemies saw them. Not in a disputed video. Not later. Live. On camera. With every news anchor on earth mid-sentence. The two men who were dead stand up — and then they rise into heaven in a cloud while the world watches. There will be no credible deepfake defense with a hundred camera angles, and with intelligence agencies that had every sensor trained on Jerusalem for years. The resurrection of the two witnesses will be the most witnessed, most verified, most inescapable supernatural event in human history. The "great fear" that falls is not on a few people in a room. It falls on the watching world simultaneously, in every language, on every screen. Imagine the 2022 World Cup Final at its peak — 1.5 billion people mid-celebration — and then imagine everything stopping. At once. Not because the game ended. Because something happened that no one can explain and no one can deny. That is Revelation 11:11. The party does not wind down. It stops.
What This Means for Those Who Are Watching
John of Patmos wrote a description of a global simultaneous broadcast event — live viewing, real-time emotional response, coordinated gift exchange, a resurrection watched by enemies — in 95 AD. He had no category for it. He simply wrote what he saw. And what he saw is now, for the first time in human history, fully operational. The infrastructure is not coming. It is here. It carried 1.5 billion viewers to Qatar in 2022, and it will carry every eye on earth to Jerusalem when the hour arrives. Jesus told His own disciples how to respond:
"Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near." — Luke 21:28, NKJV
He did not say panic. He did not say hide. He said “look up.” The same generation that built the technology to fulfill Revelation 11:9 is the generation being called to lift its head. That is not a coincidence. That is a calendar. The world will watch the two witnesses fall and celebrate with the energy of a World Cup championship. But before that day arrives — long before it — there is a Church being called to understand what it is watching when five billion eyes lock onto a single event, and to ask the question the crowd will never think to ask:
If the world is already this ready to watch — how close is the One worth watching for?
