Spielberg’s Disclosure Day:

Would Alien Disclosure Shake Christianity?

He’s Done This Before

Steven Spielberg is stepping back into the alien conversation with his new movie Disclosure Day, and this time, it is not just about lights in the sky, government secrets, or visitors from another world. Who can forget his first forays into aliens in both E.T. The Extraterrestrial and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind? This time, Spielberg is asking a much bigger question. What happens to faith if humanity is told, all at once, that we are not alone? What happens to Christianity if the government admits that extraterrestrial life exists, that it has known for decades, and that the public has been kept in the dark? That is the conversation Spielberg is stirring up. And whether someone believes aliens are real, fake, misunderstood, demonic, interdimensional, technological, or simply part of a cultural narrative, one thing is clear: this subject is no longer staying on the fringe. It is entering the mainstream. It is entering entertainment. It is entering politics. And now, through Spielberg, it is entering the theological conversation. So today, we are going to look at three things. First, what Spielberg is actually saying. Second, why this subject gets connected to Christianity. And third, whether the Christian faith is truly threatened by the idea of intelligent life beyond Earth.

What Spielberg Is Raising

In his CBS interview, Spielberg described Disclosure Day as a movie about what would happen if someone had access to decades of visual evidence concerning extraterrestrial activity and released it to the whole world at once. In other words, not a slow drip. Not rumors. Not fuzzy footage. But a global “data dump” of supposed proof. That alone is enough to create panic in the story. But Spielberg takes it further. He said the movie also takes the position of the church and asks what this would do to fundamental beliefs. He specifically raises the question: is God only God on this planet, or is God the God over every system where there is civilization and intelligent life? That is the key issue. Spielberg is not merely asking, “Are aliens real?” He is asking, “If aliens are real, does that change God?” And that is where Christians need to slow down and think biblically. Because the answer is no. If God is God, then He is not local.

He is not tribal. He is not limited to one nation, one planet, one galaxy, or one dimension of creation. Genesis 1:1 says:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (NKJV)

Not just the earth. The heavens and the earth. Psalm 24:1 says:

“The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.” (NKJV)

Psalm 19 says the heavens declare the glory of God. Colossians 1 says that all things were created by Christ, through Christ, and for Christ, whether visible or invisible. So the Christian faith does not begin with a small God. It begins with the Creator of all things.

Why This Could Shake Some People

Now, to be fair, Spielberg is not completely wrong when he suggests that disclosure could disturb people. It probably would. Not because Christianity is weak, but because many people have a shallow version of Christianity. Some people’s faith is built more on assumptions than Scripture. Some people believe the Bible teaches things it does not actually say. Some people think Christianity depends on humans being the only intelligent creatures God ever made. But the Bible never says God could not have created other beings. In fact, Scripture already reveals non-human intelligent beings. Angels. Cherubim. Seraphim. Principalities. Powers. Demons.

Spiritual beings. The Bible is not a materialist book. It does not present mankind as the only intelligence in all existence. It presents mankind as uniquely made in the image of God, fallen in Adam, and redeemable through Jesus Christ. That is different. The issue is not whether other beings could exist. The issue is who they are, what they are, what they teach, and whether they contradict the gospel of Jesus Christ. That is where discernment matters.

The Real Threat Is Not Aliens - It Is Deception

Here is where Christians need to be careful. The biggest threat to Christianity is not the announcement that there may be life somewhere else. The bigger threat is a narrative that uses “alien disclosure” to undermine biblical truth. For example, what if the message becomes: Jesus was just an alien teacher. The resurrection was advanced technology. Angels were extraterrestrials. Miracles were misunderstood science. Humanity was seeded by beings from another world. Sin is not rebellion against God, but ignorance of our cosmic origins. Salvation is not through Christ, but through enlightenment from higher beings. That is where the danger is.

Not in the existence of another creature. But in a false gospel. Galatians 1 warns that even if an angel from heaven preaches another gospel, we are not to receive it.

That is a serious warning. Paul does not say, “If the messenger looks impressive, believe him.”

He does not say, “If the being has power, follow him.” He does not say, “If the message comes with signs and wonders, accept it.” He says if the message contradicts the gospel, reject it. That means Christians should not be panicked by this conversation, but we should be alert.

Would Alien Life Contradict Genesis?

One of the arguments often raised is this: if aliens exist, doesn’t that contradict Genesis?

Not necessarily. Genesis tells us that God created the heavens and the earth. It tells us who made everything. It tells us mankind’s origin, mankind’s fall, and the beginning of God’s redemptive plan through human history. Genesis is not trying to give us an encyclopedia of every creature God ever made in every realm. The Bible does not tell us everything God created. It tells us what we need to know for salvation, covenant, worship, obedience, and the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Deuteronomy 29:29 says:

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever…”

That verse matters here. There are things God has revealed. And there are things God has not revealed. Christians do not need to pretend we know everything. But we also do not need to surrender what God has clearly said.

The Christian Response

So how should Christians respond to Spielberg’s question? First, we should not panic. Truth does not threaten God. If something is true, God is still God. Second, we should test every claim.

1 John 4:1 says not to believe every spirit, but to test the spirits to see whether they are from God. Third, we should remember that creation is not the Creator. No matter how advanced a being may be, no creature deserves worship. Revelation shows us that even angels refuse worship. They point worship back to God. Fourth, we should keep Jesus at the center.

Christianity does not stand or fall on whether there are creatures elsewhere in the universe.

Christianity stands on the person, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. If Christ is risen, our faith stands. If Christ is not risen, our faith falls. That is Paul’s argument in 1 Corinthians 15. Not aliens. Not UFOs. Not government disclosure. The resurrection.

Serving Only God

So when Spielberg asks whether God is only God on this planet, the Christian answer is simple.

No. God is not only God here. He is God over all creation. The heavens declare His glory. The earth is His footstool. The stars are His handiwork. The angels worship Him. The demons tremble before Him. And every knee will bow before Jesus Christ. So Christians do not need to fear the question. But we do need to be ready for the deception that may come with the answer.

Because the issue is not whether mankind discovers something strange in the sky. The issue is whether mankind will still bow before the One who made the sky. And if these otherworldly beings come they will surely come with a message. We need to be ready for the test that comes with hearing that message and discerning if it is Biblical. Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth, even the truth about aliens.
