More Chicken Little Conspiracies
While the sky may not be falling, some see things including people on the earth rising instead. According to some that is exactly what will happen this summer as we learn from an article from the Economic Times:
A new conspiracy theory claiming that a catastrophic event will strike Earth for seven seconds on August 12, 2026, is going viral on social media.
According to the theory, the Earth will experience a brief “gravity blackout,” during which gravity will completely switch off. The claim further alleges that the US space agency NASA is secretly preparing for the event, supposedly spending $89 billion under a classified operation called “Project Anchor.”
The article comes with this disclaimer:
This is a conspiracy theory. There is no scientific evidence to support these claims, and no confirmation from NASA or any credible space agency. The information circulating online could very well be fake or misleading.
I’m sure somebody in the legal department required them to say that, but this next part pretty much should have left people with sufficient doubt:
The theory, first circulated by a TikTok user named fiery_by_nature, claims NASA knows the planet will temporarily lose gravity but is deliberately withholding the information from the public. The alleged purpose of the secret project is to test whether Earth can survive a sudden gravitational disruption.
This user said the information came up on her “for you” page so she isn’t coming up with it on her own and she does ask for other users to shed light on it. Regardless of how it happens (blackholes, aliens?) it has to get in line behind asteroids coming at us like the approach of interstellar objects like comet 3I/ATLAS or other celestial events to catastrophic outcomes such as alien encounters or global calamity in 2026.
What Would Happen If It Was True?
The article muses on what would actually happen during those fateful 7 seconds:
From a physics perspective, if Earth’s gravity were to completely switch off for seven seconds and then return, the consequences would be dramatic—but not apocalyptic.
First second:
The moment gravity disappears, everything becomes weightless. People, vehicles, water, and loose objects would begin drifting upward. There would be no sensation of being pulled up—only weightlessness, similar to what astronauts experience in space.
Seconds 2–4:
With gravity gone, inertia takes over. The Earth continues rotating, while objects briefly move in straight lines. Oceans would begin lifting off the surface, and the atmosphere would start expanding outward. The scene would be chaotic but eerily silent, with no explosions.
Seconds 5–7:
People could float several metres into the air. Aircraft, birds, and unsecured structures would drift unpredictably. Tectonic plates would momentarily lose pressure, allowing stress to build beneath the Earth’s crust. Satellites and even the Moon would begin drifting from their stable orbits.
Rising would seem to be the least of our troubles. It’s coming back down that will be bad for us:
When gravity returns:
This is where the real damage would occur. Everything that floated would slam back to the surface. People could suffer serious injuries from falls, water would crash down causing massive flooding and tsunamis, and the sudden readjustment of the Earth’s crust could trigger widespread earthquakes and volcanic activity… Earth would not be destroyed, and life would not end instantly. However, infrastructure would be severely damaged, coastal regions would face devastation, satellite networks would suffer losses, and atmospheric balance could be disturbed for years.
Those in the scientific community are skeptical as they should be:
Scientists stress that such a gravity shutdown is not physically plausible with our current understanding of physics—and remains firmly in the realm of science fiction.
Is there a Biblical perspective on this? Sure, there is. We will see a major period of upheaval during the Tribulation with earthquakes, things falling from the sky, demonic creatures stinging the population for 5 months and the rise of a one world leader who will kill anyone who gets in his way. If you want to be in fear of something, that qualifies as concerning to say the least. And the next gravity-defying event is when Christians are snatched out of the earth to meet Jesus in the clouds, you know it as the Rapture. It’s called the Blessed Hope for good reason. I’m not living in fear of many of these conspiracy theories because the Bible already details the future for me and as long as I am about my Father’s business when He returns in the clouds I’ll be just fine. If you want that same peace, accept Jesus’s offer to forgive your sins and then commit the rest of your time on earth serving Him. The gravity of not doing that is the real danger.
